The Thrill of the Chase – Mountain Lion Hunting with Hounds in Wyoming

There’s something ancient about the sound of hounds echoing through a snow-covered canyon. The partnership between hunter and hound goes back centuries — long before GPS collars or modern rifles — when man relied on dogs not just for companionship, but for survival. Hound hunting is one of the oldest methods of pursuit, rooted in the bond between human and dog, and perfected over generations.

Today, it remains one of the most challenging, exhilarating, and ethical ways to hunt mountain lions in the American West.

A Tradition Rooted in Conservation

Mountain lion hunting isn’t just about the chase or the trophy — it’s an important part of wildlife management and conservation. In Wyoming, lion populations are carefully monitored by Game and Fish, and hunting seasons are structured to maintain balance with deer and elk herds.

A mature lion can take down a deer or elk every week, so responsible hunting plays a vital role in protecting those populations and ensuring a healthy ecosystem overall.

For the hunter, it’s not just about pulling the trigger — it’s about the pursuit, the respect, and the connection to the land. Tracking a lion through snow and timber tests every bit of skill, endurance, and patience a person has. It’s as much a mental challenge as it is a physical one — and that’s what makes success so rewarding.

The Taste of Adventure – Cooking Mountain Lion

If you’ve never tried mountain lion meat, you’re not alone — but you might be surprised to learn it’s some of the best wild game out there. Mild, tender, and often compared to pork, lion meat is excellent for stews, roasts, or even breakfast sausage.

Here’s a simple favorite around camp:

Mountain Lion Backstrap Medallions

Slice lion backstrap into medallions.

Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

Sear in a hot cast iron skillet with butter until golden brown.

Add a splash of white wine and a spoonful of cream to the pan; simmer for a few minutes.

Serve over rice or mashed potatoes.

Tender, flavorful, and a true taste of adventure.

The Hounds Behind the Hunt

Our hounds are the heart of a lion hunt. Each one has its own personality and strengths — some are cold-nosed trackers that can pick up an old trail, while others are fast and relentless once the scent is fresh.

We use modern GPS tracking collars that allow us to see their progress in real time, but make no mistake — it’s still the dogs’ instincts that make the magic happen.

We take great pride in how our hounds are trained, cared for, and loved year-round. They’re more than just hunting dogs — they’re partners, family, and a huge part of what makes these hunts so special. After a long day in the mountains, there’s nothing better than seeing those dogs curled up in their boxes, tired and content, having done what they were born to do.

The Challenge and the Reward

Mountain lion hunting is as physically demanding as it is thrilling. You might climb thousands of feet through snow, follow a trail for miles, or hear the dogs baying from a ridge across the canyon. Every step builds anticipation, and when you finally reach the tree and lay eyes on that lion — it’s a moment you’ll never forget.

It’s a hunt that pushes you to your limits and rewards you with a story you’ll carry for life.

Join the Chase

If a mountain lion hunt has been on your bucket list, there’s no better time than now. Our winter hunts take place in Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains — rugged country, breathtaking scenery, and a true Western experience from start to finish.

Join us for the chase. Feel the rush. Experience the tradition.
